Another one of those coatings that's been around forever, but still finds use today as a multi-purpose sealer. Clear shellac makes a great wood sealer, and in the mold making business we find that it is great for isolating incompatible materials. For example, if you are making a silicone rubber mold of an oil-based clay that will inhibit the cure of the silicone, simply seal the surface with shellac and go for it. Is also useful as a separating agent for making multipart latex molds where you might want to brush latex onto latex and not want it to stick. When you're through simply clean the shellac off with ethanol.
